Researching and Taking Action in the ClassroomThis action research study explores academic tracking in a PBL (Project-based learning) middle school environment. The study examines two tracked classrooms taught by the same teacher with the same content, and questions if PBL will be successful with homogeneous academic tracking. This study provides some qualitative and quantitative classroom data to compare honors and non-honors students’ behaviors, attitudes, and achievement over a two week project using one-to-one laptops and internet access. The study uses student survey data, teacher observations, and work sample data to compare each class’ responses to technology use and PBL to determine if academic tracking can lead to a successful PBL environment. This study also consults several articles published on the topics of PBL and academic tracking to see where both intersect in relation to the research question.
